Bidfood and AW
Europe to install
1,5 MW of

this summer.
AW Europe, an automatic transmission specialist maker, and Bidfood, a food wholesaler and distributor, are major industrial actors in Wallonia. These thriving and environmentally conscious companies wanted to drastically reduce their impact on the environment. They opted for solar photovoltaic panels to provide them with competitive green energy, herewith contributing to the reduction of harmful greenhouse gas emissions. They relied on Climact to assist them in the process. Climact engineers, finances, installs and operates 1,5 MWp of photovoltaic units on Bidfood and AW Europe facilities. For Bidfood, an installation is planned in Thuin, and for AW Europe, installations are planned in Baudour and in Braine l’Alleud. As a result, Bidfood and AW Europe are now going to produce together about 1500 MWh of green electricity annually with no initial investment, generating direct savings on their energy costs and far less impact on the environment. This corresponds to a surface of about 10 000 m² and the electricity consumption of 400 households on an annual basis. Brick by brick.

Walloon Building
This strategy covers the renovation of the entire Walloon building stock and its various buildings types. Climact contributed to its development first by structuring the renovation challenges and initiatives in the literature. Then Climact organized stakeholder workshops around ‘renovation techniques’, ‘financing’ and ‘implementation enabling measures’. Finally, Climact supported the administration and the Energy Ministry cabinet in the negotiation and validation process. Around 150 stakeholders were involved in this process. The Walloon Government approved ambitious renovation objectives and a set of measures to achieve them, the strategy was submitted to the European Commission and published on time.

Stiftung to clarify
essential issues in
the debate on the
Belgian electricity
In 2003, the Belgian government decided on a phase-out of its nuclear power fleet by 2025. The policy brief commissioned by the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung EU (hbs EU) to Climact, investigates the issues regarding the Belgian electricity landscape in preparation of this phase-out. Is Belgium prepared and ready to fill the gap with renewable energy sources? What is the impact on electricity infrastructure, future investments, energy security and emissions? The policy brief addresses the cost of RES and their integration to the electric system, comparing it to alternatives such as nuclear and their related risks. The brief highlights the rapidly decreasing costs of renewables, based on recent project data and the feasibility of high RES penetration. It also points out the costs, risks and uncertainties of the ageing nuclear power plants.

The European Calculator aims to provide decision makers with accessible energy models relating GHG emission reductions with human lifestyles, energy demand and production, the exploitation of natural resources, job creation, and their related costs. The European commission mandated a wide European consortium to develop these models in the context of the Horizon 2020 research project. The objectives are to communicate the current energy policy choices and the results of other EU models and to provide a high level of stakeholder involvement and transparency. The project will cover the energy, emissions, materials, resources and economic dimensions. Within this consortium, Climact was asked to lead 2 important work packages: designing and programming the model and detailing the transport sector (analytics and stakeholder consultations).
What’s in the wind?
CLIMACT studies the
economic impact of
the offshore wind
Belgium has the opportunity to deploy a 2200 MW capacity of offshore wind energy by 2020 and potentially up to 4000 MW by 2030. This energy is essential to reach the Belgian objective of sustainable energy production. The Belgian Offshore Platform mandated Climact to assess the macro-economic impact of the offshore wind industry on the Belgian economy today and in the future. It is already supporting more than 15.000 jobs and generates more than 1 billion euros added value per year, contributing to the improvement of the trade balance. It also has a positive impact on GHG emissions, air quality and public health. Objectifying the debate is essential, especially since the recent offshore wind developments observed in neighbouring countries. The study supports the current debate on the energy supply mix in Belgium with facts and clarifies the impact of the subsidies required for these deployments on public finances.
